Target group
University teaching staff from all status groups. This workshop will be conducted in English.
Participants …
- contextualise key empirical findings on the use and productivity effects of generative AI in academia.
- identify use cases for generative AI along the phases of the academic research and writing process.
- create suitable prompts for selected academic writing tasks and try them out in short exercises.
- reflect on the opportunities and limitations of using AI with regard to academic integrity, transparency and data protection, also with a view to their own teaching and supervision.
Content
This workshop is aimed at teaching staff who want to use generative AI in their own research and writing as well as when supervising student theses. Drawing on selected studies on the use and productivity effects of generative AI, the workshop outlines the role AI now plays in academic work.
The focus is on the academic writing process: from generating and narrowing down ideas to literature search and review, structuring, drafting and revising. Live demonstrations show how current language models (e.g. ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude) can support these phases, for instance by sharpening research questions, structuring literature or providing feedback on draft texts. Specialised tools such as Gemini Notebook (formerly NotebookLM) or Elicit are briefly put into context; they are covered in depth in a separate workshop.
Participants learn about key principles of effective prompting in an academic context and apply them in materials provided by the workshop facilitator or in examples from their own work. This workshop closes with a discussion of the opportunities and limitations of employing AI in academic writing and basic rules for transparent and responsible use.
Methods
Short inputs based on current studies, live demonstrations, brief individual exercises using participants’ own AI accounts, moderated discussion and reflection.
Advice
For active participation in this workshop, access to at least one current AI system (e.g. ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude) is required. You are welcome to bring your own text samples (e.g. abstract, proposal, chapter draft), but this is not a prerequisite. You will receive the login details (Zoom) for this workshop in good time before it starts.
